Client Description
Founded by Ellen and Sam Flannery, CancerFree KIDS supports pediatric cancer research by raising funds in a myriad of ways (through special events and corporate alliances) and to make a real difference in both the local and national research community.
Client's Need
A revamp of its previous website, improving its scale, navigability, and functionality. A need for more immediate updates would be needed, and hopefully manageable from within the organization.
A separate online fundraising approach was also attractive, working in tandem with the main web site. It would center around a cartoon lion mascot named Courage, symbolizing the courage that typefies those with cancer and his/her family & friends. Branding would need to be created from scratch.
Our Solution
After initially adding a successful online store to the previous site, it was decided by CFK to have a full-site rework.
The new cancerfreekids.org site featured a totally new design approach, though maintaining the pre-existing CFK logo. The goal was to make the site brighter and more jubilant than the previously maroon and dark purple site. A stricter consistency to font treatment tightened the layout. Photography was used sparingly and to stronger effect, and photo collections were placed in web galleries. The page organization prioritized important information like news, events, and call-to-action buttons (e.g. Donate, How You Can Help, etc) to appear on the home page, while maximizing ease-of-navigation with convenient menus on every page. The online store was empowered to work with both PayPal and Google Checkout.
The separate fundraising site would be called SendCourage, and its creation would allow visitors to purchase and send a stuffed lion toy and/or a pendant as a gift to anyone of their choosing, with all proceeds benefiting CancerFree KIDS. A streamlined but robust e-commerce solution was the focus of this site, as gift cards can also be sent, and both PayPal and Google Checkout are viable options. A Flash cartoon animation originally existed at the site, showing Courage travelling by land, sea, and air to give a CFK pinwheel and some support to a small child.
This is a video of the cartoon we created for the CancerFree KIDS ongoing "Send Courage" campaign, a Flash animation about a toy lion that people can gift to friends and family, with proceeds going toward pediatric cancer research. The orignal score for the piece was also created by FluidMedia.
